I'm interested in ******. Is there anyone else out there?

Suppose there are a dozen people around Thanet with an interest in some hobby or sport but there's no club and these people don't know each other. How can they discover each other and eventually start their own club? It would be neat if there was a way of helping individuals reach critical mass and eventually form a club. A way of letting people say:

"Hey, I'm interested in X. Is there anyone else out there?"

Does anyone have any ideas on how to achieve this?

http://www.meetup.com is interesting, but it's not free. It's free to join a group, but if you want to start a group it's over £100/yr so that's too much of a barrier.

There used to be a club called Thanet Vikings that played at Hartsdown according to [4]

Basketball

There seem to be no clubs in the area with the exception of Pfizer. For comparison, Canterbury has six, Herne bay has 3.

Ice-skating / Ice-hockey

The nearest ice-rink is in Gillingham. There is a Facebook group lobbying to get an ice-rink for Thanet. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=131417432309

Language/Culture clubs

There are of course several language schools in Thanet, but there don't seem to be any clubs, like a French Club or Alliance Francaise, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, etc. They provide a great way to share culture, taste different cuisines, practice language skills, and make new friends.

Does anyone know of any clubs like this?

Triathlon

Thanet roadrunners has some duathlon events (mountain bike and running)
The Deal Tri club is large (400 members) http://www.dealtri.co.uk/ Perhaps people from Thanet are going there. Perhaps a Thanet Tri spin-off might be an idea to cut down on the driving.

Volleyball

In Margate we host the Margate Masters Beach Volleyball. International teams attend and it has been "voted as the Best Tour Event in 2009 and 2010 by the players and officials of Volleyball England". Yet we don't have a volleyball club in Thanet! Does anyone of know of any local clubs?

There is Pfizer Volleyball Club http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=208119489583 but not sure if it is still active.

Water polo

Wednesday, 16 September 2009:

Unfortunately water polo clubs in Thanet have all closed. The nearest active clubs are Faversham, Dover, Folkestone or Hythe. Expense and the availability of pools bought about there demise but the Clubs above are all thriving. The is an East Invicta Water Polo Section but once again that is based on the Clubs above.

Hovercraft Club http://www.hovercraft.org.uk The HCGB has a number of regional branches located around the UK where enthusiasts hold regular meetings to talk about their craft and the exciting sport of Hovercraft racing and cruising.
Cosplay. Some people nearby [7]
Guerrilla gardening: Gardening/tidying up public land or someone else's land for everyone's benefit. Some guerrilla gardeners carry out their actions at night, in relative secrecy, to sow and tend a new vegetable patch or flower garden. Some garden at more visible hours to be seen by their community.

Thanet Sheepdog Society
